What are the Mini-Battles?
The Europe-88 Project commenced in early 1999. As time progressed, it became evident that the amount of research necessary for accurately simulating a European conflict was going to be even more massive than originally estimated. I therefore decided to shift the emphasis of development from data research to the actual wargaming rules necessary to bring together Harpoon and TOAW and make the entire
thing work. At that point, I also realised that, once these mechanics were complete (or reasonably fleshed out, anyway), their use need not be restrained exclusively to the E-88 project. They could instead be used in any MBX/CPX project that involved the use of true combined arms operations and operational/strategic level elements.
Another factor that became obvious during the development of the mechanics was that it would be futile to wait until the ruleset was feature-complete
before testing it. For one, the rules might never be 100% complete. Furthermore, as my software development backgound has taught me, it is much more effective to start with something small, test it "live" and then build upon it in small chuncks rather than build a second Rome and only then verify it.
It was therefore decided to create a series of mini-battles that would put the various mechanics of the project through their paces. Ideas that worked would be kept, those that
didn't would be discarded and replaced with something else to do the job. The battles would start small in scale, then grow as more and more additional elements are thrown-in for testing.
The current schedule includes a series of different mini-battles, each intented to cover different aspects of the E-88 functions and rules. Further battle ideas are in consideration (mainly driven by what else needs to be tested).
