Description: Former HMS Vengence sold to Brazil in 1956 after serving with both the RN (1944-52) and the RAN (1952-55). From 1957 she was in Rotterdam being refitted in preperation for Brazilian service. Refit involved adding 8.5 deg angled deck as well as major overhaul. In 1960 she was commisioned into the Brazilian navy. Initially the Minas Gerais operated only helicopters (SH-3A Sea Kings, UH-13 Ecureuil II and UH-14 Super Puma). In 1965 however S2F-1 Trackers (S-2E or P-16 in Brazilian service) of
1º Esquadrão do 1º GAE were cleared to operate onboard. The Tracker was the only fixed wing aircraft to operate as a regular part of the Minas Gerais' airwing throughout her service life with the Brazilian Navy. Minas Gerais underwent a major overhaul from 1976-80. She was laid up from 1986 due to catapault problems but was refitted from 1991 and returned to service in 1993. The last Tracker was flown from her decks in 1996. In 1997 exercises with Argentina saw ANA Super Etendard and Sea King aircraft operating from the Minas Gerais. In 2001 she was reclassified as a helicopter support ship but her final fixed wing operations were conducted with A-4KU Skyhawks purchased from Kuwait to form the airgroup for the Minas Gerais' replacement, NAe São Paulo A-12 ( fmr French Clemenceau). The Minas Gerais was finally decomssioned on October 16 2001.
