Displacement: 2900tons;

Description: This class of seven was based on the preceding St Laurent class but featured a different armament. Four were refitted during the late 1960s and early 1970s to become the Improved Restigouche class. The remaining three vessel were withdrawn from service soon after. The four refitted vessels underwent the DELEX during the 1980s and two underwent a further Gulf War upgrade in 1990 to improve their self defence capability. All vessels had been paid off by 1998.

St Laurent DDE/DDH

Description: A large Canadian built class derived from the British Type 12. Service entry from 1955-57. Between 1963 and 1966 the vessels were converted to DDH standard with the removal of the rear weapons and the addition of a helicopter pad and hangar. The Destroyer Life Extension (DELEX) program commenced in 1979 and all vessels of this class went through this rebuild except the first of class DDH 205 St Laurent which had been paid off in 1974. The DELEX aimed to extend the service life of Canada's steam powered destroyers and involved a comprehensive structural and mechanical overhaul and a systems upgrade involving replacement of radar systems modernization of fire control systems, replacement of electronic warfare systems, replacement of command, control, and navigational systems, replacement of sonar systems and replacement of message-handling systems.

Description: The four destroyers of the Mackenzie class were essentially a repeat of the Restigouche class, with improvements in habitability, and bridge and weather-deck fittings better suited to cold-weather operations. All four ships underwent DELEX Program in the early 1980s.

Description: Annapolis and Nipigon were the final variants of the St. Laurent class of which there were 4 different sub-groups. Retaining the hull-form and machinery of the earlier units in the class a new armament was fitted and the upperworks were substantially redesigned with a flight deck and hangar added similar to the arrangement on the original St. Laurent ships after conversion.

Description: These vessels were originally intended as part of an eight ship class Area AAW combatants. The Tartar missile would have been the primary weapon system but the expense caused the program to be abandoned. Instead the four vessels built were fitted for ASW duties self defence AAW capability. A large helo pad was fitted aft with two hangars for Sea King helicopters. From the late 1980s the ships entered the Tribal Update & Modernization Program (TRUMP). This removed the 127mm gun from the "A" position and fitted a 29 cell Mk 41 VLS in its place. The original pair of WM-22 fire control radars were replaced with STIR 1.8 radars to illuminate for the SM-2MR SAMs of the VLS. An OTO Melara 76mm gun was fitted just forward of the bridge and a Phalanx CIWS atop the hangars. The Sea Sparrow launchers and the Limbo ASW mortar were removed.
