Propulsion:2 shafts; 4 diesel turbines 42300 shp; 29.6kts
Description: The Cassard program was launched in 1972 to replace older Surcouf class. In 1978 the decision was taken to produce the vessels as a derivation of the Georges Leygues-ASW class. 7 units were scheduled, but financial reasons cut this to 4 and finally only 2 units were built because of United States' decision to stop the production of SM-1s. Tartar systems were picked from those equipping former Kersaint-class destroyers. The are the most sophisticated vessel of the Marine Nationale after the carrier Charles de Gaulle. The main role of the Cassard-class is to provide AAW escort for the carrier, with which they share the Senit-16 communication system. Although they can accomodate a towed-array sonar, this option has been discarded, so as the replacement of the Tartar system by the new Aster missiles. Both ships will be replaced by Horizon-class destroyers.

In October, Fance and Italy both agreed to keep the program alive. The UK Type 45 DDGs will still use the PAAMS missile system. A company, Horizon SAS was created with representatives from Italian Fincantieri and Finmeccanica and French Thalès and DCN.
Horizon destroyers are a mixture of Italian (nice structures) and French (stealth and modularity) designs. Propulsion is a mixture of diesel and gas. Armament will include the new generation of SAMs, and communication networks will be at the top standard.

Propulsion:2 shafts; 2 diesel turbines 52000shp, 2 gas turbines 28000; 30.5kts
Description: This class of ships is the primary ASW force of the Marine Nationale. The main taskings for these vessles are covering SSBNs transit zones and providing anti submarine defence for carrier groups. Development began in 1970 as a replacement for Maillé-Brézé class ships. Originally, 18 ships were scheduled but economy measures led to only 7 being eventually built. Their design incorporates lessons learned from the Tourville-class ships' first deployments. Differences between ships is explained by the fact that Toulon-based units don't have towed-array sonars, the Mediterranean sea being considered as to noisy for such equipment. These ships have taken part in all major commitments of the Marine Nationale since their introduction, from Lebannon to Yugoslavia. All the ships of the series but the Georges Leygues have been deeply modernized during their career. The Jean de Vienne was the first French ship to be fitted with the Prairie-Masker system, the Primauguet was the first to accomodate a towed-array sonar able to dive up to 700m(instead of 300m previously), the Lamotte-Picquet being the first to receive the Crotale EDIR system (able to attack sea-skimming missiles). All ships will soon be able to carry the new Mu-90 Impact torpedo (the D 646 is already fitted with these and both D 644 and D 645 will soon follow). The Georges Leygues was also retrofitted to serve as school ship alongside Jeanne d'Arc (R 97). all will be replaced by the new Multi-Missions Frigates.

Description: This class of small ASW ships was initiated in 1969 according to the "Blue plan", which aimed at upgrading the French Navy's ASW capabilitiy. The goal was also to replace effectively some 32 ageing ships. 14 units were ordered in 1974 and 3 more soon followed. 3 similar ships were sold to Argentina in September 1978. These are simple and solid ships. They are able to effectively attack submarines operating between depths of 6 to 300m with their rockect launchers. Cheap and easy to keep up, these ships sail an average of 160 days a year.  The oldest units original equipments have been replaced by more modern devices between 1989 and 1999. They can be used as scouting ship for major task forces.
These ships will be replaced between 2010 and 2016 by the new class of Multi-Mission Frigates.

Propulsion:2 shafts; 4 diesel turbines 17600 shp, 23.5kts
Description: This program begins in the 80es, with the Marine Nationale's wish to have light frigates to replace former T-47 class ships. Their mission is to act as scout and anti-surface ship. The hull is made a a mixture of glas and resin, which leads to a reduction of IR emissions. Designed with smooth angles (10° declivity), its RCS is reduced to a minimum. Propellers are shaped in a way that Prairie-Masker system has been judged useless for this class of ships. The main point that has been stressed on is survivability. The gun's turret has been shaped to keep with stealth. A couple of stabilizers prevent the ship from loosing it even with a sea level 6. La Fayette class frigates will be the first units to accomodate the new NH-90 helicopter. Taiwan is also operating 6 La Fayette frigates.

Description: This new class of ship will be a replacement for the Ouragan class which is ageing. According to the French designation, these are Batiments de Projection et de Commandement(BPC, Amphibious and Command Ship). Although their delivery date approaches (Mistral's forepart has been put to water in January 2004), little is known about their specifications. Their missions however will be exactly the same as other French amphibious ships: forces' landing and support and humanitarian duties. The building of 2 more Mistral-class ships has been temporarily been delayed in favor of the funding for a second carrier. A modified version of this design is under consideration for the Royal Australian Navy.

Description:
In April 1974, France proposes to Belgium and Netherlands to build common minehunters. Programis officially launched on April the 28th, 1975. Belgium (10 units) was in charge of electric devices, Netherlands (15 units) of propulsion, and France (15 units) of mine hunt systems.France ordered only 10 units, but after the decommission of Circé-class ships in 1997, France bought 3 Belgian units. Indonesia (2 units bought on March the 29th), Egypt(2 ships bought on January the 17th 1985) and Pakistan (3 ships) also use these ships. Hulled with composite glass-resin, these vessels are without magnetic signature. Mines are tracked thanks to a soar, and are destroyed either by divers or remote-controlled robot. French units are currently undergoing modernization with improved detection devices.

Description:
Afloat support ships are essential to naval task forces' operations. In 1972, French Marine Nationale asked for the building of a new class of tankers/ replenishment vessels. 5 units were built, 3 of them being called Batiments de Commandement et de Ravitaillement (BCR: Command and Replenishment ships): Marne(A 630), Somme(A 631) and Var(A 608) are able to embark a staff of 70 persons. This class is able to perform both UNREP and VERTREP thanks to its helicopters. These ships can transfer 1000m3 of liquids per hour and 11tons of solids in 30minutes. It carries 10000 tons of oil, 500tons of kerosen, 130 tons of distilled water, 170 of food, 50tons spares and 150 tons ammo. Not less than 3 ships can be replenished at the same time (one per side and one at the back).
