Description: Laid down 21 June 1944, renamed 11/1945, construction
suspended following WWII. Construction resumed mid-1950's
and the Hermes was finally commissioned as a light fleet carrier
on 25 November 1959. She went into refit 24 Feb 1964 and returned
to service in May 1966. Hermes was decommissioned to reserve
14 July 1970 but was reactivated and converted to a commando
carrier at Devenport Dockyard 1 March 1971 to 18 Aug 1973.
The Hermes experience yet another career change when she was
converted to ASW carrier 10 May 1976 to 10 Dec 1976, then
replaced in ASW role by Bulwark before conversion to her final
configuration of VSTOL (Harrier) carrier in 1980. Hermes was
scheduled for yet another decommissioning in 1982, but was
retained for Falklands service. Despite playing a pivotal
role in the South Atlantic once the Illustrious was commission
Hermes was finally decommissioned to reserve 12 April 1984
and stricken for disposal 1 July 1985.
This was not the end for this proud vessel though. She was
sold to India 19 April 1986 and refitted prior to transfer
with new fire control equipment, navigation radars and deck
landing aids. Her boilers were converted to take distillate
fuel and the ship was given improved NBC protection.. She
commissioned 12 May 1987 as INS Viraat (R22), and upon arrival
in India was formally recommissioned 15 Feb 1989. A boiler
room flood put Viraat out of action in 1993 and while repairs
were effected she received a new search radar. Another minor
refit in 1996 saw the wartime 40mm guns replaced by 40mm Bofors
and a pair of AK-230 30mm gatling guns.
INS Viraat began another life-extension refit in July 1999.
This refit included upgrading propulsion systems, a package
of sensors to sound emergency alerts, a modern communication
system, a long-range surveillance radar, new weapon systems
including Barak SAMs, new hangar fire curtains, a revamped
lift system to reduce reaction time in the event of an attack
and a new flood alarm system. The vessel underwent sea trials
in December 2000, missile trials in March/April 2001and finally
returned to service in early June 2001 after nearly two years
in refit. The vessel took part in the International Fleet
Review in Mumbai on 17 February 2001.She is expected to serve
through until 2010.
