The ATR-42 is a twin turboprop powered regional
airliner in the same class as the Bombadier Dash 8. The aircraft was
developed by the ATR consortium formed by Alenia of Italy and
Aerospatiale of France with a first flight in 1984. Alenia has further
developed the aircraft to create the ATR-42MP maritime patrol aircraft.
This features XXXX SAR/ISAR surveillance radar and is operated by the
Italian Ministry of Defence (armed with a fixed, forward firing gun)
and the Italian Coastguard (unarmed).
