The 747 was developed by Boeing as a private venture. The
aircraft was more than twice the size of any airliner before
it. While becoming a hug success for Boeing in the airliner
market only small numbers have entered military service. Japan,
Iran, Israel and Saudi Arabia operate the aircraft in the
strategic transport and VIP roles. The US also operates a
pair as VC-25 to transport the President and another four
as E-4 airborne command posts. The AL-1A anti ballistic and
cruise missile aircraft is based on the 747-400F.
