The Harrier II features a brand new, much larger
wing than the original Harrier. In conjunction with a more powerful
engine this significantly increases the load that the aircraft can
carry. The first AV-8B's were delivered to the USMC in 1984. In
that same year the first development GR.5 for the RAF was flown.
Both RAF and USMC Harrier II's have been upgraded, featuring the
addition of a nose mounted FLIR, with upgraded RAF aircraft becoming
GR.7's. The ultimate development of the AV-8B is the Harrier II
Plus, This features an APG-65 radar and is operated by Italy, Spain
and the USMC. Italian and Spanish models are to carry the AIM-120.
