Dassault Mirage F1

Initial effiorts to replace the Mirage III were focused on the 20 tonne F2. This fighter was however cancelled in favour of the F1 which Dassault had developed as a private venture. Of similar layout but smaller the F1 was not a revolutionary step. It was however a big improvement over the Mirage III. The Atar 9K-50 was considerably more powerful, the aircraft had 43% more internal fuel and an improved Cyrano IV radar. The change from the delta wing to a conventional swept wind design improved manoeuvrability, lowered approach speed and gave a 30% improvement in field performance. Just like the previous Mirages the F1 saw service with the Armee de l'Air and a number of export customers.
