The Tu-160 (NATO name Blackjack) is the heaviest and most powerful
bomber ever built. The aircraft was developed as a direct counterpart
to the B-1A. Despite the cancellation of the US aircraft development
of the Tu-160 continued. The design is similar to the B-1 with variable
geometry wings but is significantly larger. The four NK-231 turbofans
are rated at 55115lb thrust with afterburner making them the most
powerful engines ever fitted to a combat aircraft. Only around 34
of an authorized 100 Tu-160s were built before the end of production
in 1992. Of these 19 remained in the Ukraine after the break up
of the Soviet Union. Eight of these have been returned to Russia
and the remainder have been scrapped
