The Tu-160 (NATO name Blackjack) is the heaviest and most powerful bomber ever built. The aircraft was developed as a direct counterpart to the B-1A. Despite the cancellation of the US aircraft development of the Tu-160 continued. The design is similar to the B-1 with variable geometry wings but is significantly larger. The four NK-231 turbofans are rated at 55115lb thrust with afterburner making them the most powerful engines ever fitted to a combat aircraft. Only around 34 of an authorized 100 Tu-160s were built before the end of production in 1992. Of these 19 remained in the Ukraine after the break up of the Soviet Union.
