The Lynx was initially developed as a naval ASW and
ASuW helicopter the Lynx is also employed by the British Army in
the anti tank, scout and transport roles. A cooperative Anglo/French
effort the Lynx was first produced in the HAS.2 version. The RNs
HAS.2s were fitted with Ferranti Sea Spray radar and dunking sonar.
The French Lynx HAS.2(FN) had the OMERA-Segid radar. RN Lynx have
been upgraded to HAS.3 standard with more powerful engines and modified
radar. The Lynx had been quite successful in the export market and
most aircraft of HAS.2/HAS.3 standard. The current Royal navy standard
is the HAS.8 with a new composite main rotor, uprated engines, nose
mounted thermal imager, and improved ESM and processing equipment.
The radar is upgraded to Sea Spray 3000 standard but plans to incorporate
a new mounting giving 360 degree coverage have been scrubbed. This
option is still available for export versions, which are currently
marketed under the Super Lynx name. South Africa is acquiring Super
Lynx Series 300 helicopters with CTS800 powerplants, two crew EFIS
cockpit and an APS-145 radar.
