Description: There are currently two Type 054 vessels under construction
at different yards in Shanghai and Guangzhou. The new frigates will
replace the aging Jianghu class and complement the PLANs new destroyer
classes as a lower cost but still effective combatant for a variety
of tasks. Featuring a point defence SAM system, eight SSMs and a
helicopter for ASW and missile targeting duties the Type 054 is
a well balanced frigate. Future examples may employ new VLS SAMs
and improved SSMs.
