R 01 Dedalo (ex USS Cabot) class CV

Description: Originally laid down as a light cruiser in 1942, this hull was reorderd as a light fleet carrier and was commisioned on 24 July 1943 as the Independence class CV-28 USS Cabot. Decommisioned in 1947 she was reactivated in 1948 as an ASW carrier before being finally decommisioned from the US Navy in 1955. From 1965 the Cabot was reactivated a second and modernized before joining the Armada Espanol on 30 August 1967 as the SRS Dedalo (R 01). The Dedalo served as an ASW carrier and embarked an airgroup of 20 ASW helos. From 1976 she commenced operating Harrier STOVL aircraft. Efforts to procure a replacement for the now ageing Dedalo proceeded throught eh 1980s and with the commisioning of the Principe de Asturias in 1988 the Dedalo was finally retired in 1989.

Description: The Principe de Asturias was built to replace the the old Dedalo in Spanish Navy service.  Serving as the flagship of the Armada the carrier performs both sea control tasks with its battlegroup and AV-8B+ aircraft or ASW patrol with its helicopters.

Description: These vessels are the first European ships fitted with the SPY-1/AEGIS combat system. Based on a common hull developed with Germany and Netherlands the systems fit is unique to Spanish Armada requirements.

Description: A modification of the US Knox ASW frigate design. A Mk22 GMLS is added in place of the flight deck and hangar aft providing a measure of AAW capability. Retaining the Mk 112 ASROC laucher still allows standoff engagement of enemy submarines.
