Onslow Class (UK Oberon)
Displacement: Surfaced 2080 t, Submerged
2450t.
Dimensions: Length 88.5 m; Beam 8.1 m; Draught 5.6 m.
Armament: 6 x (533mm) forward torpedo tubes and two shorter
533mm tubes aft, initially with 12 x Mk 8 straight running
torpedos for the forward tubes and Mk 20 ASW torpedos for
the stern tubes. After upgrade 12 x Mk 48 torpedos and capability
to fire sub-Harpoon missiles.
Propulsion: Two English Electric main motors, two ASR 16VVS-AS21
diesel generators 1373kW each, two shafts, Surface 2745kW
for 12 kts, and Submerged 4476kW for 17 kts.
Description: The British Oberon class were developed as the
successors to the successful Porpoise class. First joining
the RN in 1960 the first RAN example entered service in 1967.
Five more were delivered up until 1978. Initially deliverd
with British systems and weapons the boats were upgraded during
the 1980s and recieved new American BQG-4 sonar array, a towed
array and compatibility with Mk 48 torpedos and sub-Harpoon
missiles. All boats have now been withdrawn from service,
replace by the Collins class.
