A Rubis Amethyste class nuclear attack submarine on patrol

Rubis-AMETHYSTE class

Displacement: 2,670 tons submerged
Dimensions: 73.6 x 7.6 x 6.4 meters (241 x 25 x 21 feet)
Armament:6 21 inch torpedo tubes (14 Exocet & torpedoes)

Maximum Depth:350 meters
Description: Very first nuclear attack submarine built in France, the Rubis was launched in 1976 and commissioned in 1983. Original plans scheduled the building of 8 units, but budget restriction brought their number to 6.
The 5th unit, S605 Améthyste, is an upgraded version. Améthyste is not only the name of a gemstone, it's an acronym for "AMElioration Tactique, HYdrondynamique, Silence, Transmissions, Ecoute"(Tactical, hydronynamical, Silent, Transmissions and Sensors Improvement). This version is fitted with a linear towed array working on low frequencies. Automation of some tasks are also part of the improvements. All Rubis class have been upgraded to the Améthyste standard, but the first one which will be replaced in 2010 by a new class of submarines called "Barracuda".

Description: In 1958, French President Charles de Gaulle took the decision to grant France a nuclear deterrence. This finalized with the Military Program Law 1960-1964.The first unit, Le Redoutable was ordered on May the 16th,1963 and launched on March the 29th,1967.
Originally fitted with M-1 Ballistic missiles, this class saw all of further developments, with Le Foudroyant equipped with improved M-2 as it was commissioned, Le Tonnant with M-20(last of the first generation missiles) and L'Inflexible with M-4, all other subs but the decommisionned Redoutable being fitted with these missiles as of 1995.

Le Triomphant class SSBN

Le Triomphant class

Displacement: 14,120 tons submerged
Dimensions: 138 x 12.5 x 12.5 meters (452.5 x 41 x 41 feet)
Armament:16 MSBS(Sea to Shore Ballistic Strategic) ballistic missiles, 4 21 inch torpedo tubes (12 Exocet & torpedoes)
Propulsion: Steam turbines, 1 reactor, 1 shaft, 41,500 shp, 25+ knots
Maximum Depth:+300 meters
Description:
The 6th Military Program Law laid the basis of an improved version of Le Redoutable class, dubbed "new generation". This was to take into account the fact the original design was from the 60es. Improvements were mainly around discretion, thus the overall weight of the submarines climbed from 8,000 to 13,000 tons. As other French submarines, automation allowed the reduction of the crew from 135 to 111 and electronics now improves detection abilities.
Fitted with new generation of French nuclear missiles M-45, the last unit will be fitted with an improved missile M-51.
Belonging to the Force Océanique Stratégique( Strategic Ocean Force), at least 2 submarines are at sea at every moment, ensuring French independance through nuclear deterrence.
