Description: Project 667A was a second generation SSBN project. 34 submarines were built during 10 years. About half of the submarines were upgraded to project 667AU "Nalim" with R-27U (SS-N-6 Mod 3) ballistic missiles, they also had improved navigation and fire control equipment. A single submarine (K-140) was modernized with twelve experimental R-31 (SS-N-17 Snipe) solid fuel ballistic missiles (project 667AM "Navaga-M" Yankee II SSBN).

The range of SS-N-6 Serb was about 2500 km and patrol zones of these SSBNs were not far from american coast.

After SALT agreements most submarines were modernized. 6 submarines were fitted with 32 RK-55 Granat (SS-N-21 Sampson) land attack cruise missiles (Project 667AT "Grusha" Yankee-Notch SSGN). Project 667M "Andromeda" Yankee-Sidecar was single sub for testing Meteorit-M (SS-N-24 Scorpion) cruise missiles. The system was canceled and sub returned to navy only with torpedo armament. Project 09774 Yankee-Stretch was carrier of small subs, without weapon. Projects 667AK "Akson-1" Yankee-Pod and 09780 "Akson-2" Yankee-Pod were submarines for new sonar suites and data processing eqiupment testing, they also had no armament.
