Description: Starting from 1967 till 1984 subs of this project and its modifications (671RT, 671RTM, 671RTMK) were the main attack subs of the Soviet Navy. The primary targets for them were submarines. Their tasks were to hunt for enemy SSBN, protect the Red Navy's own SSBNs and SAGs from submarines and assist in ASW operations. Also traditional tasks have remained: attacks on surface ships, mining, sea denial operations. During Cold War Viktors served practically in all Oceans and Seas.

Three submarines (K-314, K-454, K-469) for Pacific fleet had SS-N-15 Starfish stand-off weapon aside usual torpedoes (project 671V); and during modernization K-323 obtained new long-range cruise missile SS-N-21 Sampson (project 671K).
