The scenario's objective is to sink at least six Soviet Boomers.
To accomplish this, I have four attack submarines, two Los
Angeles Class 688s (Baton Rouge and Corpus Christi), one Narwhal
Class (Flying Fish) and one British Conqueror Class (Churchill).
All subs start at intermediate depth, no course or mission,
and speed set for five knots. All are EMCON passive.
The scenario starts at 14 Sept. at 0100 Zulu.
01:00:00 All three U.S. submarines are ordered to replace the
UUM-44A SUBROCs in their tubes with Mk 48 Mod 4s because nuclear
release has not been granted. Flying Fish detects a Goblin
to its southwest, depth and speed unknown. Flying Fish ordered
to investigate at five knots and deep depth. Other subs are
also ordered to deep depth and will head at five knots into
the area outlined by four reference points where Soviet boomers
are believed hiding.
01:15:51 Flying Fish detects an unknown surface contact to the east. Although unidentified, it is presumed to be hostile.
02:02:19 All subs ordered to shallow depth to check for contacts.
02:03:47 Goblin and torpedo in the water detected by Churchill. Churchill goes active SONAR, fires Mk 24 Mod 2 Tigerfish on bearing. Churchill turns 180 degrees away from incoming torpedo; goes to flank speed and maximum depth.
02:08:12 Three U.S. subs ordered to periscope depth for ESM
check.
02:10:17 Corpus Christi detects a surface contact to its east. U.S. subs ordered back to deep depth to resume search for Boomers. Churchill still running from enemy torpedo.
02:10:42 Churchill identifies incoming torpedo as an USET-80.
02:14:38 Goblin near Churchill kicks up speed to 30 knots. It must have detected the incoming Tigerfish. Churchill is still running, but the USET-80 is gaining on it. Churchill fires a second BOL Tigerfish.
02:15:18 USET-80 is gone. The Churchill kills its SONAR, reduces speed to five knots and changes course from 273 degrees to 180 degrees toward Soviet Goblin.
02:21:14 Churchill changes course to 215 degrees.
02:45:09 The first Tigerfish runs out of fuel.
02:47:44 Corpus Christi detects with passive SONAR a second surface contact to the east. It is presumed hostile.
03:05:56 Flying Fish loses its Goblin contact. Changing depth to intermediate.
03:16:18 Passive SONAR on Baton Rouge detects a Goblin to its west. Changing course to intercept.
03:19:23 Flying Fish ordered to shallow depth.
03:24:39 Flying Fish loses surface contact. It is ordered to periscope depth for an ESM check.
03:39:39 Passive SONAR on Baton Rouge positively identifies its Goblin as a Delta II class missile ship, course 033 degrees at five knots. Baton Rouge will change its course to 315 degree and maintain 190 meters depth and speed to five knots to intercept.
03:51:24 Churchill loses its Goblin contact. Flying Fish ordered to 190 meters depth.
04:14:03 Corpus Christi loses a surface contact. Baton Rouge ordered to stop and ascend to 100 meters in an attempt to get a better position lock on the Delta II before launching torpedoes.
04:29:59 Baton Rouge ascending to 40 meters in an attempt to get a better position lock on the Delta II.
04:55:48 Baton Rouge launches a Mk48 Mod 4 at the Delta II. Baton Rouge goes to 190 meters depth.
05:01:56 Torpedo missed the Delta II. It is maintaining a speed of five knots and a heading of 177 degrees, it may not be aware it was fired upon. Baton Rouge will maneuver in its baffles and close for another shot..
06:13:53 Churchill detects both a Goblin and a torpedo launch. It fires a Tigerfish BOL, goes active SONAR, makes a 180 degree turn away from the contact, goes to flank speed and maximum depth.
06:19:03 Baton Rouge fires a Mk48 Mod 4 at the Delta II.
06:20:43 Churchill identifies incoming torpedo as a USET-80.
06:22:40 Mk48 Mod 4 misses the Delta II. Baton Rouge will close before firing again.
06:23:54 Churchill is sunk.
06:33:37 Baton Rouge fires Mk48 Mod 4 from range of between 1 and 2 nautical miles from the Delta II.
06:36:32 Delta II is sunk. Baton Rouge resumes northwestward course at 5 knots at 190 meters depth.
07:28:56 Passive SONAR on Baton Rouge detects a Goblin to the north northeast. Baton Rouge will set an intercept course.
07:45:18 Baton Rouge detects an incoming torpedo. It fires BOL a Mk48 Mod 4, goes active SONAR, reverses course 180 degrees, goes to flank speed and goes to maximum depth.
07:49:51 Goblin sunk by Baton Rouge.
08:07:39 Baton Rouge evaded incoming torpedo. It resumes northwestern course, depth 190 meters, speed five knots and passive SONAR.
09:00:00 All subs ordered to periscope level in stages to check for contacts.
09:35:06 No contacts. All subs ordered back to 190 meters depth.
12:31:10 Two surface contacts detected by Corpus Christi passive Sonar. Sub ordered to 240 meters depth.
13:00:39 One surface contact identified as a Kanin-class destroyer. Speed 22 knots, course unknown.
13:05:32 Second contact identified as a Kanin.
13:36:53 Flying Fish detects an incoming torpedo and a Gremlin to the northwest. Flying Fish will fire a Mk48 Mod 4 BOL, turn 180 degrees from the contact, go active SONAR, go maximum depth and flank speed.
13:44:04 Flying Fish fires a second torpedo BOL.
14:14:41 Both Mk48 Mod 4s miss the Goblin. Flying Fish goes passive SONAR but maintains flank speed and course away from Goblin contact.
14:56:58 Flying Fish loses contact with the Goblin. Goblin went up to 30 knots while evading torpedoes, so suspect it is an attack sub rather than a boomer.
16:56:03 Behavior of the Kanins suggest they are hunting the Corpus Christi, but are unsure of its exact location.
18:00:41 Flying Fish detects a surface contact. Sub ordered to reduce speed to 5 knots.
18:03:00 Flying Fish detects a second surface contact. It looks as if the Corpus Christi may have successfully evaded the two Kanins.
18:11:21 Flying Fish identifies one of the surface ships as a Krivak I. It's equipped with a Mare Tail active VDS that could be a problem.
18:51:21 Flying Fish identifies second contact as a Krivak I.
1:54:44 Corpus Christi loses contact with one of the Kanins.
23:39:20 Corpus Christ loses contact with the second Kanin.
15 September
03:56:22 Flying Fish loses contact with both Krivak Is.
14:05:50 Corpus Christi detects a Goblin to the east north east. Sets course to intercept.
15:00:43 Goblin identified as a Delta III, speed 5 knots,
heading 111 degrees. Corpus Christi increases speed to 10
knots to close distance.
15:13:08 Corpus Christi launches Mk48 Mod 4 at Delta III, reverses course at flank speed, max depth and active SONAR. Flying Fish reports incoming torpedo. Flying Fish launches BOL, increases to flank speed, active SONAR and maximum depth.
15:14:39 Delta III sunk.
15:32:13 Corpus Christi evades torpedo. Resumes normal search, speed, depth and passive SONAR.
15:57:11 Torpedoes misses both Goblin and Flying Fish. Flying
Fish goes to passive SONAR, reduces speed to 5 knots, changed
depth to 190 meters and sets course to the northeast.
16 September
02:40:54 Corpus Christi detects a Goblin to the northwest. Sub moves to intercept.
03:44:46 Corpus Christi identifies Goblin as a Delta I, speed five knots, course 324 degrees, estimated range three nautical miles. Corpus Christi increases speed 10 knots to close distance.
03:54:31 Range closed to 2 nautical miles. Corpus Christi fires a Mk48 Mod 4, reverses course 180 degrees, goes to flank speed, active SONAR and max depth.
03:58:21 Delta I sunk. Corpus Christi resume normal search, speed and EMCON.
17:40:45 Baton Rouge detects a Goblin to the southwest. Baton Rouge moves to intercept.
20:58:30 Goblin at five knots, heading 106 degrees. Distance five nautical miles. Baton Rouge increases speed to 10 knots to close.
21:05:11 Goblin identified as a Delta II. It changed course to 005 degrees. Baton Rouge reduces speed to five knots.
21:09:17 Distance closed to between one and two nautical miles. Baton Rouge launches Mk48 Mod 4, reverses course 180 degrees, goes to flank speed, max depth and active SONAR.
21:10:55 Delta II sunk. Corpus Christi resumes normal search parameters.
17 September
11:57:15 Flying Fish detects Goblin to its northwest. Flying Fish moves to intercept.
12:21:53 Flying Fish detects incoming torpedo. It fires BOL, reverses course 180 degrees, goes active SONAR, max depth and flank speed.
12:52:42 Both torpedoes miss. Flying Fish goes passive SONAR, 100 meters depth, reduces speed to five knots and turns 90 degrees to the left.
15:07:55 Flying Fish detects a new Goblin to the east. It moves to intercept.
18:53:03 Flying Fish detects incoming torpedo. Return fire BOL two Mk48 Mod 4s, reverse course 180 degrees, go active SONAR, max depth and flank speed.
19:24:29 Incoming torpedo missed. Both Mk48s missed. Flying Fish changes course 90 degrees to the right, goes passive sonar, depth 190 meters and speed 5 knots.
19:27:04 incoming torpedo detected coming from the west; Goblin contact as well. BOL launch, max depth, active SONAR, flank speed, 180 degree heading from target.
19:40:42 Goblin sunk.
19:51:01 No more torpedoes detected. Flying Fish resumes normal search parameters.
20:11:11 Flying Fish detects incoming torpedo from the west northwest. Flying Fish fires BOL, goes 180 degrees from torpedo track, goes active SONAR, max depth and flank speed.
