Played Stepen M. LeBlanc's Operations Babylon tonight. It's a Harpoon 3 recreation of the flawless Israeli raid on the Osirak Nuclear Site south of Bagdad in 1981.
I started by waiting for my E-2 to launch to gain a picture of what was going on in Iraqi airspace. Several aircraft were detected and I figured my best approach considering defenses and probable interception was to somewhat mimic the Israeli approach by launching one large strike with several packages. The strike was lead by 4 Falcons, followed by groups of Eagles consisting of 2 aircraft each trailed by a final group of 4 Falcons. Eagles where armed with Sparrows, Sidewinders and Falcons with Sidewinders and 2000lb Mk84 bombs. I plotted them on a path that would lead them south of Jordan into Saudi aerospace and then Northeast along the border and then north to Bagdad. My flight was relatively uneventful until about a ninety miles from the target when the Iraqi CAP began to bore in obviously detecting my group. I quickly tasked the first group of Falcons to strike targets (3 on the primary and 1 on an ADF site that was along the flight path). I tasked the first 2 groups of Eagles to illuminate and shadow the first strikes. Several minutes later my first group was striking the targets (direct hits) and egressing as my Eagles were engaging enemy aircraft (unidentified) and scoring 3 quick kills. I then tasked the trailing Falcons to target several facilities at the nuclear site and escorted them in. This probably wasn't the best of tactics because it ultimately lead to two losses (one Falcon and one Eagle) but those targets were also destroyed. As my final groups made their way back I achieved victory (although far from flawless). Looking back on it I probably should have been a little more aggressive with my Eagles. I kinda let the last interceptors bore in way to close. I'm assuming at least one loss was to them (Gun Kill!) and one to a SAM (SA-6).
Overall this was a good scenario. I finished it in under 30 minutes and it gave me a few harrowing moments. Stephen was searching for an accurate model and I think he pretty much acheived it.
My losses and expenditures were:
1 Falcon, 1 Eagle
18 Sparrows, 7 Sidewinders, 12 2000lb Mk84 bombs and some gun
Iraqi losses and expenditures were:
6 Floggers, 5 facilities, 1 SA-6 site
6 SA-6s, and numerous gunshots
