Fought out Miguel Molina's Canary's Cage. Good scenario, thanks Miguel!
Decided early to use maximum CAP to keep aggressors away from the amphibious group.
Only one escort was allowed to radiate until contact although the carrier battle
group was on EMCON C, unlimited emissions, from the start. AMRAAM-armed
Harriers are very effective, and supported by F/A-18's of the Spanish Air Force,
they proved to be most effective Fleet Defenders. I destroyed all NAIL
surface groups and achieved a 7:1 kill ratio in the air while not losing a single amphib thanks to aggressive CAP and early intercepts.
Attack any subsurface contact though,
the Algerian Kilo's make that worthwhile and you may not get lucky enough
to out run 70-knot wake-homing torpedoes like F 83 Numancia did. Beware of coastal defenses
near the objective, scouting is vital here. Be aggressive with your air
power and realize from the start that your Mirage's lack the legs to be fully
effective. Several of your SSK's should be able to inflict losses as well. There are a few
surprises here, beware of neutral's that are not and look out for Otomat-armed NAIL
surface groups. Also be sure to scout for potential coastal defenses
near the objective. Aggressive scouting should disclose the NAIL amphib group,
which is vulnerable to Harpoon missiles from land-based air power. Then the mission
becomes one primarily of air defenses and you will need a lot of that. The
Spanish Navy has the means to win back the Canary Islands if handled properly. Enjoy.
