Since this was only the 3rd Harpoon3 scenario I have played, it was first that had air, surface and sub threats in it. I won the scenario with the loss of five Harrier jets. As far as I know, all enemy ships were destroyed, the base on the continent was destroyed and all air units were destroyed. I never did have contact with a sub, maybe my transport group routing took them too far away or the detection never happened on both our parts.
I set up my transport formation with a routing that took them indirectly to the the friendly port. The BB Missouri group I sent directly to the Maldives and pathed in between the islands. My logic was that the main threat would come from the east. I took a very big chance and put the group at full speed to expedite their arrival. I doubted a sub would be in the shallow waters around those very small islands.
I initially put two groups of two Harriers patroling to the east. Within a very short time, I detected multiple inbound Mirage 2000's. My Harriers pounced on the Mirages and destroyed them all but two brave Harriers were lost in return. Not good, first combat and already have lost 25% of my fighter strength. I sent up my last four Harriers in groups of two to patrol to the east. A wave of Jaguar attack aircraft were detected inbound to my base. My Harriers once again answered the call and took out all but three Jaguars, losing two Harriers in exchange. All the remaining Jaguars were destroyed with SAM's from Maledives but not before one Jaguar destroyed the radar installation. Now I was at 50% fighter strength and no radar.. not looking too swell.
The SSN Honolulu picked up some ship and I sent her off to the northeast to investigate. In the meantime, I needed to get some radar coverage for the Maledives asap. I sent a Seahawk with its radar blazing up from the Missouri TF. I immediately had contacts from multiple ships. The Honolulu was sent to destroy. All my ship kills were made with the Honolulu, I used Harriers to keep the sub-hunting helicopters off my sub. Using Mk 48 ADCAPs, all ships were destroyed with the loss of one Harrier to an enemy Sea Harrier.
Now my Seahawk had another group of ships coming in from the north. The Honolulu went in with Harpoons blazing and then Mk 48 ADCAPs, no ships survived the Hoinolulu's wrath. Once that was complete, USS Honolulu was down to just Tomahawk munitions. Hmm.. there seemed to be a base to waste them on.. unfortunately, I believe they were all shot down or missed.
I sent the Missouri group over toward the Indian base and pounded it to pieces. My missle cruiser shot down all the MiGs that were nothing but an irritation.
About this time, my transport group was pulling into port.. victory was mine.
Was a great scenario, I dont have much experience yet but this one was perfect for learning to control multiple tasks. Thanks for you efforts.
Here's a short AAR for Quinton's Battle of the Maldives scen (his first Harpoon3 scenario BTW). This is a small and fast-played AAW/ASuW scen filled with civilian merchants and other features to make your mission more difficult. I lost all (!) of my Harriers, mainly to enemy Mirages and Sea Harriers but at one point I also got tangled with a couple of MiG-29s (bad idea :-). My attempts to destroy the Indian base with Tomahawks was not a great success, only one of four targeted facilities were destroyed. Realizing that the Indians were sending their CVBG towards the convoy I was supposed to protect, I ordered the Iowa SAG to close on the enemy at flank speed. I opened my attack on the Indians with a volley of Harpoon SSMs which was naturally answered by the Indians. Three Indian surface combatants and one carrier were sunk, while the destroyer USS Kidd fell victim to a Styx (the warhead on those missiles are BAD NEWS!). Then, four enemy Harriers took off from the surviving Indian carrier and killed my cruiser with Sea Eagles. Damn! I continued closing in on the Indians at flank speed with my remaining ships and opened fire with Iowa's guns. And that was the end of the scenario for the Indians... :) I got the merchants to the Ref Points and won the scen (hurray!).
