Hi All, I had some time so I gave Mike Mykytyn's Tigers a whirl. I chose this scenario because the Indian naval assets were starting from port for the most part, which would be very real world. I figured that this would be a heavy ASW scenario given Mike's track record with subs and the fact that for Pakistan to have any chance in a standup fight with India they would have to utilize their submarine forces well.
So I established ASW patrol zones around my port, and sortied the Indian subs through these zones before moving other surface assets out of port. I then moved individual ships off the coast to form two task groups, one with the Indian carrier (Harriers flown on from land base), and one with the support ships and one frigate for escort.
Sub activity was immediate and heavy. I lost a Rajput almost immediately before swarming a Pakistani sub with Sea Kings. While moving my carrier force north I encountered 2 more subs and lost a frigate.
Meanwhile the air activity was what frustrated me most. I set several CAPs along the border, but the Indian MiG-21s were decimated. I finally solved this dilemma with CAPs of Flankers. I gained air superiority. Air attacks with Jaguars and Sea Eagle SSMs quickly mounted the tally for ships sunk to 13. The victory conditions were for 17.
I now turned my attention to land targets, re-arming my remaining MiGs and Jaguars with iron bombs, but keeping the Flankers on AAW patrol within 50 miles of the Pakistani air bases. Good thing! The Pakistanis launched Exocet armed Mirages at my various ship formations, and the Flankers caught most. Some leakers got through and I was taught a lesson about using Sea Harriers as Interceptors.
My air attacks quickly destroyed the majority of the land targets, but the ammo dump proved to be a tough nut. Wave after wave of MiGs and Jaguars pounded the dump, and I eventually re-armed the Flankers with LGBs to no avail. By not paying close attention I did loose several Flankers to SAMs and AAA. I was running out of time.
I had moved the carrier group steadily north toward the on-station zone, when I finally located a group of four Pakistani ships to the far west. I detached a destroyer and then a frigate at high speed to intercept because I didn't think I could get within range with Sea Harriers in time. I did not want to push the carrier group too fast because of the sub threat.
Good thing! In the on-station zone I encountered two more Pakistani subs, lost another frigate and destroyer but sunk both subs (I think). The detroyer and frigate eventually caught and detroyed the last four Pakistani ships.
The supply group moved steadily northward into the on-station zone several hundred miles behind the carrier group. I used the land based Mays to sanitize a corridor. This transit went without incident.
I now faced another dilemma. The iron bomb armed planes seemed not to make a dent in that last ammo dump target, and with the ready times I didn't think I would enough time to destroy it. So I detached all the corvettes armed with land-attack Styx, and sent them on their way at flank speed. Finally within range they launched a massive wave of SSMs and destroyed the dump. I did loose two Veer to a C-201 battery I hadn't located and destroyed.
I achieved victory, but at a high cost.
4 Sea King
6 Flanker C
5 Sea Harrier
And Mike, I checked after playing, and I got 5 out of 7 Pakistani subs besides meeting the victory conditions.
