This scenario is set in South America ( obviously ) , the
map is fairly massive and there is clearly going to be a lot
of action spread over a wide area. Decided to play as the
Argentinean side, you have the option of playing Brazil or
Chile also. Argentina is allied with Brazil. Looking at the
resources available to me I was hoping for a great deal of
support from my Ally !
Scenario starts June 10th 2004 at 12.00.
TG Hercules is to patrol the exclusion zone so set a course for the area. Two diesel subs operating on the Western side were to help block the straits.
Subs were set to patrol at periscope depth initially. A P-3 Orion being sent across as a target spotter. Combat Air Patrols were set up to cover bases. These weren't really set up fast enough as air strikes rapidly heading in.
12.18 Rio Gallegos under attack.
12.19 Rio Grand under attack.
12.20 Both attacks mostly beaten off with some destroyed.
12.32 CAP by now has detected various shipping in the straits,
some localized and classed as hostile.
13.26 Air War gradually being fought but generally going badly. Santa Cruz has an ESM contact to NE classified as a probable Condell. Course change to intercept.
13.48 Now many contacts still to NE.
13.54 Visual contact on a hostile Ro-Ro but at 13nm and not likely to achieve a firing solution.
14.00 Speed up to 10 knots, still unlikely to get there in time.
15.04 Little in the way of an Air Force left. Santa Cruz unable to intercept. San Juan set to flank speed in path of convoy.
15.21 Santa Cruz has contact again to NE, probable civilian vessel.
15.25 Classified as civilian.
15.31 San Juan drops to creep speed as batteries almost out.
15.35 Probable course change in convoy, look to be passing by.
15.58 Set to periscope depth targets at or beyond 3nm. Not an ideal solution at all but not going to get better either. Bearing only launches with a full spread. Aimed to cover as much area as possible. 7th Torpedo fired immediately it became available.
16.06 Cougar spotted at close range and too late, torpedoes incoming San Juan lost.
16.10 Orion near the area goes active and climbs, first detection being Mirage at close range, hardly ideal. Orion shot down, but hit detected by torpedo on one unclassified ship.
17.11 4 Mirage launched vectored towards track of convoy.
17.21 All other available aircraft launched. Mirage now outbound from Northernmost base. 4 Dagger and 4 A-4 set off also, while Pucara head towards the channel with smaller missile vessels.
17.43 CAP now down to a single aircraft, Pucaras are in a dogfight with a Mirage 50, not going well either.
17.53 Daggers run in at low level on Condell and promptly miss. They commence to look for other targets.
17.57 Skyhawks hit and sink Condell.
17.58 Skyhawks hit Cargo Vessel with bombs, heavy damage caused. Vessel finished off with gunfire.
17.58 The sole surviving Pucara is shot down on a rocket attack on Teniente Uribe. Some slight damage caused.
18.01 Mirages track along the convoy suspected path , suspect most vessels now sunk.
18.35 Mirages confirm Condell and Gotea are sinking.
18.42 Mirages engage and shoot down a Phalcon AEW.
19.00 Mirages head further along the Straits. Bomb Iquique but miss. All Mirages shot down, but also score some kills on Chilean aircraft. 3 of the Daggers headed on return leg are also engaged and shot down. Air Force now has 5 available aircraft which won't be ready for some 9 hours or so. TF on station and creeping as quietly as possible.
5.01 5 strike aircraft now ready. 4 A-4 and 1 Dagger. These
set out at low altitude, along the straits from the East to
attack hostile shipping headed towards the exclusion zone.
5.29 Teniente Uribe hit and sinking, other attacks fail to score hits, no aircraft return.
Naval vessels now set to patrol as anonymously as possible, while keeping a watch for Chilean Patrol Forces. One remaining P-3 set up over the Brazilian patrols.
Disaster strikes at 17.04 as Sao Paulo is sunk by a torpedo.
19.58 The Orion is intercepted by a Mirage 50 and shot down . Unable to provide any real air cover or even any viable early warning. Alouette patrols set up along the edge of effective Exocet range.
21.35 Heroine fires 4 Exocet at Iquique who promptly sinks.
21.40 Riquelme follows the same fate.
22.14 Covangos is struck by 2 Exocet from Sarandi and sinks.
After some time lapse game ended with a fail.
This struck me as pretty much a moral victory though, the
aircraft available are pretty much overmatched in most circumstances.
With hindsight the loss was almost entirely down to Sao Paulo
sinking. All conditions barring the destroy 21 aircraft had
been met. I had largely relied on the Brazilian aircraft to
complete this part of the conditions as there was no feasible
way for me to do so. They might well have done so without
As it is I destroyed 17 aircraft, sank 2 Cochrane, 1 Ro-Ro, 1 Valdinia, Lynch ,Condell, a cargo vessel, 2 Riquelme, 2 Thompson and 2 Iquique.
A hard fight overall and a busy scenario with plenty
of atypical units. I particularly liked the center of the
action taking place along the channel/straits. Several times
the attacks centered along flying fast and low skimming the
water as interceptors scrambled from nearby bases. Not an
easy situation to solve it transpired. Shall gladly try this
out from either of the other sides at some stage.
